Puncture Repair & Slow Puncture Diagnosis

A puncture is one of the most common tyre problems faced by South African drivers — and given the state of many roads across Gauteng and beyond, it’s no surprise. Potholes, loose gravel, broken glass, and scattered debris on national routes and township roads all contribute to a higher puncture rate than drivers experience in many other countries. While a puncture may seem minor, a tyre that loses pressure suddenly at highway speeds on the N1 or N3 can have serious and potentially fatal consequences.

What causes a puncture?

Most punctures are caused by a sharp object — a nail, screw, piece of glass, or metal debris — penetrating the tyre tread and allowing air to escape. The size, depth, and location of the puncture determines whether the tyre can be safely repaired or needs to be replaced entirely. As a general rule, punctures in the central tread area smaller than 6mm in diameter can be repaired. Damage to the sidewall, shoulder, or any puncture larger than 6mm typically requires a full tyre replacement.

All puncture repairs carried out at our fitment centre comply with SANS 1553, the South African National Standard governing tyre repair procedures. This means every repair is done using an industry-approved plug-and-patch method — not a temporary plug-only fix, which is considered unsafe for sustained highway use under South African road safety guidelines.

Important: Under the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996, driving on a tyre that is visibly underinflated or structurally compromised is a legal offence and can result in your vehicle being declared unroadworthy at a roadblock. If you are unsure about the condition of any of your tyres, bring your vehicle in for a free visual inspection — it takes less than 15 minutes and could save your life.

Slow
Punctures

A slow puncture is more deceptive and in many ways more dangerous than a sudden blowout, because drivers often continue driving on a partially deflated tyre without realising it. Warning signs to watch for include:

Your vehicle pulling to one side while driving on a straight road. Unusual vibration through the steering wheel. A tyre that appears visually lower than the others after the vehicle has been parked overnight. Increased fuel consumption without an obvious cause.

Slow punctures in South Africa are commonly caused by a nail or screw embedded in the tread that seals partially around the object, corroded or damaged tyre valves which are particularly common on older vehicles, damaged alloy wheel rims from pothole impacts causing an air seal failure between the tyre bead and the rim, and deteriorated tyre sealant on run-flat or self-sealing tyres.

Driving on a slow puncture — even at low speeds — accelerates tyre wear unevenly, stresses the sidewall, and significantly increases the risk of a blowout. If you suspect a slow puncture, do not delay having it professionally inspected.

Our puncture repair process

When you bring your vehicle to us, our technicians remove the tyre from the rim, perform a full internal and external inspection, identify the exact source of the air loss, and advise you honestly on whether a repair or replacement is the correct course of action. If a repair is possible, we carry it out to SANS 1553 standard, refit the tyre, re-balance the wheel, and return your vehicle to the correct tyre pressure as specified by your manufacturer.
